Stand to Down- Dog Training

Stand to Down- Dog Training

Stand to down opens the door to a number of advanced commands. In the beginning, people often gloss
over this exercise because they don’t see the point. Don’t do that! Stand to down sets up down out of motion, which is essential when establishing distance control and emergency stops.

While your dog is in a stand, push the treat
slightly backward under your dog’s chest …

… and targeting the area between her legs.

Keep lowering the treat to the ground, and
when your dog commits to the behavior,
say, “Down,” but ONLY ONCE, and release
the treat.

Note:
If your dog keeps backing up to get the treat rather than going down,
try the under-the-leg trick.
Once your dog gets that right, return to practice this.
